St. Lucia Government Moves to Implement National Energy Policy (NEP)

The Government of Saint Lucia through the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology is moving steadfast to implement the National Energy Policy (NEP).

The NEP provides the appropriate policy and legislative environment, to utilize greater renewable energy to the extent possible. The aim is to lower the cost and price volatility of electricity and to reduce Saint Lucia’s dependence on imported oil.

Research Study Reveals Marijuana to be Drug of Choice for Prison Inmates Across the Region
A study on relationship between drugs and crime has found that marijuana was the drug of choice for most prison inmates in several countries across the region.































Citing the 2014 prison survey which was conducted in Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda and St. Kitts and Nevis, research analyst at the National Council on Drug Abuse Uki Atkinson said that was the case among both convicts and remand inmates.

Newly Established National Health Helpline Receives on Average 15 Calls Per Day
The Head of the Mental Wellness Centre says a National Health Helpline that was officially established here this week has been receiving an average of fifteen calls per 24 hour shift.

The facility was established in light of the increasing number of suicides being reported here. The male population appears to be most affected by the scourge.

Contestants Set for Upcoming Carnival Queen Pageant
After weeks of rigorous preparation and grooming, the eight contestants who will be vying for the 2015 carnival queen title are set to take to the stage.

Public Relations Officer on the National Carnival Queen Committee Louise Victor says all is in place for the staging of the beauty contest that will be staged at the National Cultural Centre on Saturday night.

Victims of Micoud Fire Receives Support at Fundraising Drive
The victims of a fire which destroyed four houses in Micoud on June 1st are expected to benefit from the generosity of St Lucians.

The support is coordinated through the Micoud North Relief Committee which was established by the leader of the Political Opposition and the Member of parliament for the area Dr Gale Rigobert.

Local Pastor Comments on US Supreme Court's Ruling on Legality of Same Sex Marriage

The trinity Lutheran Church has stated its position in no uncertain terms that it stands opposed to gay unions, citing the principles of the bible as the basis for its strong position.

US and Cuba Re establish Diplomatic Ties After 50 Years
The President of the St Lucia Cuba Humanistic Solidarity Association has reacted to news that The United States and the Communist rule Caribbean country have re established diplomatic ties after more than half a century.

Mr Rawle Harvey says the news has been welcomed by lobbyists who have been calling for the thawing of relations between the two countries.

8 Steel Pan Groups to Compete at 2015 National Panorama Competition
The Saint Lucia National Steel Band Association (SLNA) in collaboration with the Carnival Planning and Management Agency (CPMA) are gearing up to stage the 2015 National Panorama Competition.

This year, more support for the competition has been given by the Steel Bands Association of Trinidad and Tobago "Pan Trinbago". Pan Trinbago will be providing trophies, judges and promotion for the competition.

8 Contestants for 2015 Carnival Queen Pageant
The eight (8) contestants vying for the prestigious title of National Carnival Queen 2015, on Wednesday July 1st each unveiled their charities/organizations for which they will work with for the year 2015‐2016 at a Press Conference held at the CDF Conference Room, Barnard Hill, Castries.   

The National Carnival Queen Pageant Committee and the Carnival Planning and Management Agency (CPMA) introduced this new initiative of the pageant to the press, media and public as a critical move in maintaining sustainably of the National Carnival Queen product and also as an opportunity to foster continued holistic development of contestants while simultaneously increasing their social consciousness.

Public Servant to Contest  Gros Islet Seat at Next General Election
A public servant who announced her entry into local politics has spoken for the first time since first stating her intention to contest the Gros Islet seat on a UWP ticket at the next General election.

Ms Jeana Corneille was featured as a guest on Tuesday’s Newsspin program where she explained that the main reason for her entry into politics was to give a voice to those who were not brave enough to speak against injustice.

The LUCELEC Summer Employment Programme facilitates internships for students on vacation from secondary schools, the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, and university.
