Tsunami Advisory Issued for Caribbean and Central America has been Cancelled
A tsunami advisory issued for parts of the Caribbean and Central America was cancelled late last night, but fears continue to linger in the region. The advisory was issued following a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck near the coast of Honduras early Tuesday night.

Saint Lucia National Workers Uniona and First Citizens Bank Signs First Industrial Agreement
The National Workers Union (NWU) and the Management of First Citizens Bank Ltd. have signed their first industrial agreement. Clerical and technical workers employed with the financial institution will benefit from a seven percent (7%) general wage increase with back pay from February 2016.

Mr. Emmanuel Neville Cenac Appointed Governor General of Saint Lucia
Prime Minister Honourable Allen Chastanet has announced that Her Majesty The Queen was pleased to approve the appointment of Mr. Emmanuel Neville Cenac as the new Governor General of Saint Lucia, effective 1st January 2018. Mr. Cenac is a former elected MP for the constituency of Laborie, has previously served as Saint Lucia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and also served as President of the Senate.

Google to Move Finances to Bermuda Company

Tech giant Google is said to have moved €15.9 billion (US$19.2 billion) to a Bermuda shell company in 2016, saving billions of dollars in taxes that year.

Quoting regulatory filings in the Netherlands, news agency Bloomberg reported that the amount was seven per cent higher than the year before.

ECCO Advises Members of Delay in Royalty Payment

The Eastern Caribbean Collective Organization for Music Rights (ECCO) Inc. wishes to advise its members of the delay in payment of royalties originally scheduled for the final quarter of 2017.

 

According to a statement issued by the organization the delay is as a result of several reconciliation actions which must be completed before any royalty disbursements can be made. It adds that the reality is that the process has been well established and cannot be bypassed.

A new Governor General has been appointed, but St Lucians will have to wait a bit longer before government can confirm whether the reports of a replacement for Dame Pearlette Louisy are true.

 

Reports suggest that Neville Cenac has been selected to succeed Dame Pearlette Louisy who demitted office on December 31st, after serving in the position for 20 years.

Two St. Lucians are currently in police custody assisting with investigations into the shooting death of two non-nationals, according to a law enforcement source.

 

The incident occurred on Sunday, December 31st, sometime after 8 p.m. on the St. Jude Highway in Vieux-Fort.
