Fire Service Responds to an incident at the Vieux Fort Landfill

The Saint Lucia Fire Service responded to a report of an incident at the Vieux Fort Landfill around 8p.m. on Sunday 24th August, 2013.  Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered a fire concentrated to a large heap of tyres.  To date, the blaze continues.

A collaborative team comprising members from the Ministry of Health, the Saint Lucia Fire Service, the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority, the Department of Fisheries and the National Emergency Management Organisation have been working hard to assess the situation at the landfill and surrounding communities.

Fete La Rose/ La Woz is Underway
The Grand Fete La Rose/ La Woz or the La Rose Feast Day is being celebrated on Friday 30th August. Programming for the Feast Day include a church service under the distinguished patronage of Her Excellency, Dame Pearlette Louisy at the Lady of the Assumption Church in Vieux Fort from 10 am, a parade through the streets of Vieux Fort which began from 11:30 am and group presentations near the Vieux Fort Library from 12:30 pm.

Visit to Argentine Republic to Strengthen Relations with St. Lucia

A three member delegation headed by Saint Lucia´s Minister for External Affairs, International Trade and Civil Aviation of Saint Lucia, Alva Baptiste, left the island for an official visit to the Argentine Republic from August 25-27, 2013. The central purpose of this visit is to strengthen relations between the two States primarily through South-South Cooperation. 

In this regard, a high level meeting will be held between Saint Lucia´s Minister for External Affairs and the Minister for External Affairs of the Argentine Republic, His Excellency Hector Timerman. In addition the Ministers are expected to finalize plans for the opening of an Argentine Embassy in Saint Lucia.

Saint Lucia Mourns the Passing of Alimenta Bishop

Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony has expressed sorrow on behalf of the Government and people of Saint Lucia, on the passing of Mrs. Alimenta Bishop of Grenada, mother of the late Maurice Bishop.

In a telephone conversation on Monday, August 26, 2013, Dr. Anthony conveyed to the family of Mrs. Bishop, Saint Lucia’s admiration for the strength, courage and tenacity of the 97 year old.

Anti Gang Bill to be Reintroduced at House of Assembly

The Anti Gang bill which was previous circulated and publicized in April 2013, will be reintroduced to the House of assembly when it meets on Tuesday August 27th 2013.

The bill will be introduced for its first reading and forms part of the government’s response to the troubling crime situation and seeks to prohibit gangs and gang related activity.

ACCS slams Regional Governments for waiving IP rights

Regional governments are being slammed for what is being seen as their disregard for intellectual property rights rights.

The criticism comes from the St Lucia based Association of Caribbean copyright Societies ACCS in light of moves being taken to waive IP rights during the staging of Carifesta, which is taking place in Surinam this month.

Prime Minister responds to US decision

New questions have been raised concerning strong action taken by the United States against members of the Royal St Lucia Police Force, following an address to the nation delivered by Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony last night.

The statement sought to clarify a recent incident where Police Commissioner was denied permission to attend a scheduled conference in the US as well as the reason behind a decision by the United States government, to debar local police from participating in any state funded programs.

Cuba Awards Scholarships to St. Lucia Students

The Government of Cuba has once again awarded scholarships to St. Lucian students to pursue a degree in medicine for the academic year commencing September 2013.

This year's awardees, will be receiving their credentials and travel documents on Tuesday, 27th August at the Embassy of Cuba during a presentation scheduled for 10 o'clock in the morning.

His Excellency Ma Ying Joeu addresses St. Lucia Parliament

The President of China on Taiwan Ma Ying Joeu addressed members of the St Lucia Parliament today in a historic sitting of the House of Assembly.

St Lucia and Taiwan have shared diplomatic relations since 2007 when the United Workers Party took office.

Director of Public Prosecution Responds to Criticism on Verlinda Joseph Case

The Director of Public Prosecutions is responding to public criticism about a 9 year delay of the trial for the murder of 12 year old Verlinda Joseph.

Eugene St Romaine who is the victim’s father has been accused of the crime and was remanded at the Bordelais Correctional Facility until Wednesday when bail to the tune of 60 thousand dollars was posted.

St. Lucia welcomes His Excellency Ma Ying-jeou

Plans are at an advanced stage to host His Excellency Ma Ying-jeou, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), who is expected to arrive in Saint Lucia later this evening.

To facilitate his visit, it is expected that there will be some disruptions to traffic flow in and around the city.

New National Parenting Manual for St. Lucia
The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Human Service and Gender Relations through the Division of Human Services and in collaboration with the St. Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF) is in the process of developing a National Parenting Manual for St. Lucia.

On that basis a parenting conference which is receiving participation from a number of partners is being held today in order to broaden the participation towards the realization of this Parenting manual.
