A Blind Cricket Tournament which is being hosted in St Lucia has been marred by tragedy.

The incident occurred last Friday while the players were on a break due to inclement weather.

According to the Executive Director of the St Lucia Blind Welfare Association Anthony Avril, while at the beach one of the players encountered difficulty in the water and was assisted by others who were also on the outing.

However Mr Avril said despite the best efforts of a trained EMT who was also part of the team, the 28 year old player died.

Mr Avril adds that the Captain of the Barbados Team who collapsed on the field after scoring a century in an ODI is currently under observation at the Victoria Hospital.

Mr Avril cautions that several lessons must be drawn from this experience.

Among them he says is the importance of travel insurance for the visiting players. But he adds several financial issues create a challenging in providing such coverage for players.
