New information about the Zika Virus has prompted Ministry of Health officials to continue to caution people infected with the virus to use protection during sexual intercourse.
This is because the World Health Organization recently discovered that the ZIka virus can stay within semen for up to 6 months. Chief Medical Officer, in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Merlene Fredrick spoke about the issue during a press conference on Monday morning at the Ministry’s headquarters.
Fredrick says that sexual transmission has become a significant factor in spreading the virus.
Dr.Fedrick advised that people to use condoms for 6 months after the initial detection of the virus to prevent sexual transmittion.
Local clinics are currently providing free male and female condoms.
