Crop and vegetable farmers in the south of the island have taken a major hit according to preliminary reports in the wake of Tropical Storm Matthew.

An assessment was made by the Parliamentary representative for Vieux Fort North and former Agriculture Minister Moses Jn Baptiste.

He informed that farms in the constituency suffered major damage and farmers are counting several thousands of dollars in losses.

Jn Baptiste says he awaits the official report from agriculture officials on the extent of the damage.

Jn Baptiste also informs that livestock farmers have also reported lasses. He remains hopeful that the government will move quickly to restore the agriculture sector which he says is the bedrock of the local economy.

Agriculture officials are currently conducting an assessment of the sector.
