The plight of women and the lack of support systems for them is a major concern for a Minister in the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Fortuna Belrose was reacting to reports that a teenager has given birth while incarcerated at the Bordelais Correctional Facility and the rape of a 12 year old girl by a family friend.
Belrose says while the situation at the prison has been a major talking point, all efforts have been made to manage it. However she says there is need to urgently address the challenges of at risk girls.
Speaking on the rape of a 12 year old, Belrose says there is a role for society to play in protecting vulnerable girls. The comment comes amid reports that while the issue was being widely discussed in the media, a formal report had not been made to the police.
St Lucia’s Minister for Internal Security Hermangild Francis has also lamented the failure of those responsible for the minor child to have filed a police report
