Medical officials have confirmed that three people are dead and four others who sustained serious injuries in an explosion at the Cul De Sac quarry on Tuesday have been airlifted to Martinique for medical treatment.

The incident which occurred some time after 5pm activated a mass casualty response from medical officials here.

Speaking on the situation as the injured were rushed to Victoria Hospital, the newly appointed Executive Director Brenda Calixte applauded the seamless response of hospital staff to manage the situation.

Calixte also informed that medical counterparts at in neighbouring Martinique were alerted to the situation and came forward with offers of assistance for the injured.

A decision was taken by hospital officials to discharge patients who were able to recover at home in an effort to make bed space available at home.
