The island’s Chief Medical Officer has announced the resumption of the pediatric programme for special needs children.
News of its suspension came from the Secretary of Raise Your Voice St Lucia Catherine Sealys, when the government discontinued the contract of specialist paediatrician Dr Jacqueline Bird.
CMO Dr Merlene Fredericks told reporters at a press conference on Thursday that Ministry of Health has expanded the pediatric program. The program caters to children with medical, social and psychological and mental issues as well as those with disabilities.
She added that apart from the clinics at various wellness centres, its mandate also includes the provision of services to minors at special institutions.
In expressing gratitude to Dr Jacqueline Bird for her stellar contribution in the area of healthcare, Dr Fredericks announced that Dr Irma Lucy has been appointed community paediatrician.
The Ministry hopes to appoint another paediatrician for the community program to focus specifically on mental and psychiatric issues in children.
