Health services have been suspended at the Soufriere hospital after fire tore through a section of the facility in the early hours of Thursday morning.

According to the Parliamentary representative for Soufriere Herod Stanislaus, the blaze started in a room where patient records were kept. He credited the swift action by firefighters for containing the blaze to only area of the hospital. A clean up exercise began immediately in an effort to return normalcy to the hospital.

The Parliamentary representative however assured that the situation did not pose a threat to patients noting that they are only kept at the facility for observation but not overnight.

Stanislaus has also addressed concerns about the timing of the Soufriere hospital fire, which comes at the height of discussion of discussion and debate on the St Jude reconstruction project.

He also pointed to the heightened challenge in dispensing of medical care to people in the south of the island, brought on by the latest fire.

But Stanislaus maintains that the government is committed to providing southern residents with a proper hospital.

Residents of Soufriere and environs have been informed that services at the hospital will recommence soon.
