Just days following a major weather system which has left dozens of individuals counting their losses, the two main political parties have engaged in a back and forth over an opposition request for exemptions on relief supplies for storm survivors
The Government of Saint Lucia says it has noted the public appeal which was made on Monday by the United Workers Party to Prime Minister, Dr. Kenny Anthony, “requesting exemption from Customs Charges including Value Added Tax (VAT) specifically for relief supplies.”
In response, Government’s Press Secretary Jadia Jn Pierre Emmanuel says the request for exemptions was completely unnecessary and misguided. She has accused UWP leader Allen Chastanet of not being able to resist the temptation to engage in cheap partisan politics especially at this time.
Meanwhile, The Press Secretary has advised financial donors who wish to contribute to the relief effort on how to make their contributions.
She says this comes as the government has been informed that several individuals and members of the corporate community would prefer to make monetary donations.
Officials continue to assess the extent of the damage left in the wake of the storm
