The United Kingdom has pledged $EC500,000.00 in immediate support to Saint Lucia, to assist in recovery efforts following the Christmas Eve Trough. The money will be made available to UNDP to assist in agreed recovery efforts in Saint Lucia.
This was disclosed to Prime Minister Anthony who met the Minister for International Development of the United Kingdom Alan Duncan, who was traveling back to the UK after a short vacation in the Caribbean. Prime Minister Anthony met the British Minister at Hewanorra International Airport on Sunday.
Hon. Duncan says it was extremely important that he returned to Saint Lucia to convey regards from his Prime Minister and Government, and to assure Saint Lucia of the full support of the United Kingdom in such a difficult period.
During his meeting with Prime Minister Anthony, Hon. Duncan expressed regret over the loss of life and homes and pledged further long term assistance to help Saint Lucia rebuild its infrastructure.
Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony took the opportunity to brief the British MP and Minister of Government on the impact of the trough on Saint Lucia and updated him on the progress to return normalcy to the island. Mr Duncun also expressed his country’s willingness to explore other ways of providing direct assistance.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the Hon. Duncan and his Government for their consideration and assistance to the people of Saint Lucia.
