The President of the National Taxi Union says it should come as no surprise that his members will be lobbying for an increase in taxi fares.

This comes following an announcement by the National Council on Public transportation that an upward adjustment in fares will taken effect by year end.

Mr Lucien Joseph says his members have long been calling for an increase, commensurate with the hike in operational costs. The national Taxi Union is expected to discuss that matter at a meeting scheduled for Friday where they will forge a plan for moving forward

Mr Joseph cites the removal of subsidies by the government for taxi operators as a major justification for the fare increase. Mr Joseph notes that the taxi business is no longer profitable, as drivers can now hardly break even

Local taxi fares have not been adjusted since 2006
