A Sod Turning and Check handing over ceremony to commence construction of the two jetties, one at Praslin and the other at Savannahs Bay in Vieux fort took place at the two site on Thursday January.
A sum of EC 1.1 million dollars is made available to Saint Lucia by Taiwanese Ambassador H.E James Chang for the construction of the two structures.
Minister for Agriculture, Food Production, Fisheries, Cooperatives and Rural Development, Hon. Moses Jn Baptiste says that the construction of the Jetties is in keeping with a promise made by his government towards improving the living conditions of people in rural communities.
The two coastal areas are known to provide livelihood opportunities for resident of surrounding communities in the areas of Mariculture (Sea moss cultivation) and fish landing.
Users of the resource are excited with the development. They say that the jetties will assist them in securing their vessels and will attract more economic activities to the areas both with fishing and in tourism.
When completed Savannahs will for the first time enjoy the use of a jetty while Praslin will benefit from the erection of a sound structure.
