Levern Spencer is set to return to Des Moines, Iowa, this month. The Saint Lucian star is listed in a high-class women’s high jump field for the Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee.
The additions to the Drake Relays include 20 elite athletes currently ranked in the top 10 in the world in their respective events and eight that are Olympic medalists.
High Jumper Chaunte Lowe is among the competitors who will be enshrined as members of the Drake Relays Hall of Fame.
Also in the high jump will be Spain’s Ruth Beitia, Americans Amy Acuff, Sharon Day and Lowe, Hungarian Barbara Szabo and Chinese athletes Yang Wang and Xingjuan Zheng.
Three-time Olympian and World No. 2 Ruth Beitia returns to the Drake Relays, where American record holder and Relays Hall-of-Famer-to-be Lowe figures to be her main competition. But the 32-year-old Spencer, who has enjoyed success in the past at Drake, will surely be looking to crash the party.
The CARICOM record holder for women’s high jump is yet to attain a qualifying mark for the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, though she is confirmed on Saint Lucia’s team for the Pan Am Games in Toronto.
