Home team St. Vincent and the Grenadines are the first ever Windward Islands Football Association women’s champions!
Playing at Victoria Park in Kingstown on Saturday night, the Vincentians got their second win of the tournament, beating Grenada 1-0. It was the same margin by which they had defeated Dominica on Tuesday night.
Saint Lucia played the opening game on Saturday, taking on Dominica. With a draw, Saint Lucia would have secured at least third place. In fact, given the SVG result, Saint Lucia would have ended second, having drawn its first two fixtures. A win would have secured second place.
But a loss would see Saint Lucia tumbling to the bottom of the standings. And within minutes of the opening whistle, it appeared a defeat would be on the cards.
Saint Lucia had made two changes to the starting 11, forced through injury and suspension. But the feeling among some observers was that the Saint Lucians just appeared to have underestimated the heretofore winless Sisserou Girls.
Inside a half hour, Michlyn Morgan, Muryah Esprit and Kaysanda Alexander had stunned Saint Lucia, and the 3-0 lead held until the interval.
In the second half, Dominica compounded their opponents’ misery through Britney Stout and Âlee-Juh Titre, netting her second goal for the tournament.
Dominica ended second overall, Grenada third and Saint Lucia last.
There would have been some small consolation for Saint Lucia in that captain and defensive midfielder Ellaisa Marquis joined Dominica winger Titre with the award for most goals.
Saint Lucia’s men are preparing to defend their Windward Islands crown at home in May.
