There were euphoric scenes of celebration at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds in Vieux Fort as a Troy Greenidge goal in the 74th minute saw Gros Islet crowned inaugural Super League Football Champions. In excess of 1000 fans turned up at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds to witness the exciting football finals billed as the North-South Clash between Gros Islet and Vieux Fort South.
The game was relatively poised in the first half with fans at the edge of the seats speculating that any team could walk away with the title. It was an error in judgement by the Vieux Fort South team that allowed Troy Greenidge collect a loose ball to give Gros Islet the advantage. Gros Islet fans went wild chanting “Jean Gros Islet, Jean Gros Islet”.
In the third place play-off, Soufriere defeated Canaries 1 goal to nil.
Gros Islet is expected to leave St. Lucia in October of this year to be the guests at opening of the Grenada Super Knock Out competition. The winner of the Grenada Super Knockout will return the favor as guests of the 2016 Super League Football Competition
