The Caribbean Table Tennis Championships started on a high note on Tuesday evening with the Formal Opening ceremony. Minister for Youth Development & Sports, Hon. Shawn Edwards declared the championships formally opened and acknowledged that the hosting of the Championships was an indication of St. Lucia’s emerging position as a sports destination.

He also expressed hope that the efforts of the SLNTTA in hosting and participating in the championships, could serve as a catalyst for the development of young players to the sport.

Both the President of the St. Lucia National Table Tennis Association, Teddy Matthews and the President of the Caribbean Region Table Tennis Federation – Juan Villa addressed the gathering of 10 teams and their delegates.

The evening ended on a high note with the St. Lucia men’s team advancing to the quarter finals. Despite losing to regional powerhouse Trinidad & Tobago 3-0, the host came back to defeated Guyana 3-2.

The quarter final action will see St. Lucia vs Guadeloupe and Barbados vs French Guyana. Trinidad and Tobago Guadeloupe got a bye to the semi finals.

Having won over Saint Vincent 3-0, the St. Lucia Ladies were defeated by Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 and Barbados 3-0 and are now out of the Team Championships.

The Female division move semi final stage today with Guyana vs Barbados and Dominican Republic vs Trinidad and Tobago.
