The Ministry of Youth Development and Sports 2014 Secondary Schools Under 15 Cricket Tournament got on the way today at venues in the North and South of the island. This year the tournament takes the form of 25 overs a side with two games scheduled per venue on match days.
In the first match at the Piaye Playing Field, Choiseul Secondary registered a comfortable 5 wicket victory over Soufriere Comprehensive. Taking first knock, Soufriere Comprehensive was dismissed in the 20th of their 25 allocated overs for 81 with Zach Anthony 13 and Kervel Prospere 11 not out the only batsmen to reach double figures. Bowling for Choiseul Secondary, Sachin Canchon 4 for 17 in 4.3 overs, Ned Modeste 3 for 26 in 5 overs and Stephan Theophane 2 for 11 in 4 overs.
Chasing 82 for victory, Choiseul Secondary got to their target finishing on 82 for 5 in 17.4 overs with Xystus Emmanuel 25 and Ricky Nelson 13 not out. Bowling for Soufriere Comprehensive, Trevor Edward 2 for 35 in 5 overs.
In the second encounter between Beanfield Comprehensive and Piaye Secondary, it was Piaye Secondary coming on top, winning that match by 71 runs. Batting first, Piaye Secondary made 158 for 7 in their allotted 25 overs with Yeanille Andrew top scoring with 59 and 28 from female player Alliyah Alfred. For Beanfield Secondary, the best bowler was Giovani Donatien who picked up 4 for 31 in 5 overs included a 'hat trick', the first for the tournament so far.
In reply, Beanfield Secondary was dismissed in the final over finishing on 87 all out in 24.3 overs with Germaine Denoit 15. Bowling for Piaye Secondary, Yannick Osmond 4 for 8 in 4 overs and Shelton St. Rose 3 for 9 in 4 overs.
At the Monchy Playing Field, the match between St Mary's College and Marigot Secondary was not played. In the second scheduled match, SDA Academy held their nerves well and completed a tense 3 wicket victory with just 3 balls to spare against a very spirited Vide Bouteille Secondary. Batting first, Vide Bouteille Secondary made a respectful 153 all out in 24. 3 overs with Linus Clovis 49, Bathold Clavier 22 and Uran Rene 20 not out being the main contributors. Bowling for SDA Academy, Clide Augustin 3 for 12 in 5 overs, Chaz Cepal 3 for 18 in 5 overs and Gaius Jeffery 2 for 9 in 2 overs.
Set a victory target of 154, SDA Academy led by a brilliant unbeaten half century from Captain Chaz Cepal propelled his team to victory finishing on 156 for 7 in 24.3 overs. Chaz Cepal finished on 64 not out and 21 came from Rumario Simmons. Bowling for Vide Bouteille Secondary, Sanjay Hayles 2 for 18 in 5 overs and Marlon Remy 2 for 19 in 5 overs.
The tournament continues on Wednesday October15 at Monchy with Sir Ira Simmons Secondary playing Gros Islet Secondary followed by CCSS vs Entrepot Secondary. At the Mindoo Phillip Park it will be Corinth Secondary vs George Charles Secondary followed by Ciceron Secondary vs Babonneau Secondary. At the Dennery Playing Field it will be Grande Riviere Secondary coming up against Clendon Mason Secondary followed by Micoud Secondary vs Anse Ger Secondary. At the Piaye Playing Field it will be Choiseul Secondary vs Piaye Secondary in the first game followed by Beanfield Comprehensive vs Soufriere Comprehensive.
