One of the major sporting facilities in the south of the island will again be accessible to members of surrounding communities with the re-commissioning of the Philip Marcellin Ground situated in southern town of Vieux Fort
Closed for rehabilitation work since October 2012, the improved facility features upgrades to its drainage, stands, playing surface and retaining walls among other infrastructural improvements.
One of the added and prominent features of the rehabilitated facility is the installation of flood-lighting facilities which is part of an on-going project spear-headed by the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports. The lighting was funding by the Republic of China (Taiwan).
It is aimed at providing more recreational time for members of the southern town and adjacent communities who might not have the opportunity to participate in sporting activity during regular daylight hours.
The Marchand Playing Field was the first facility on the island to be part of this latest project and has been reopened since early November 2014. Similar work is being undertaken at the La Ressource Playing Field in Dennery, and the Anse-la-Raye Playing Field.
The official re-commissioning of the Playing facility will take place on Saturday February 14, 2015 at 5:00pm
The public is invited to attend.
