Ebola Cases Reported Outside West Africa
The first Ebola cases outside West Africa since the outbreak there began in March have been reported by authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Several people in the Equateur region in the DRC’s north-west have died in the past month after contracting “an unidentified fever.”

According to the Health Minister, two of the fever victims had tested positive for Ebola, and a quarantine zone would be implemented in a 100-km radius where the cases had occurred.

Cabinet has appointed a Task Force to determine whether Saint Lucia should establish an Economic Citizenship Programme.

The move is in keeping with pronouncements made by, Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy, In the 2014 Throne Speech informing that Government would begin to examine the question whether Saint Lucia should establish an Economic Citizenship Programme as a new area of investment.

That’s the message from the company’s Chief Executive Officer for the Caribbean – Martin Roos, as he unveiled plans for what he described as – radical improvements here and the Caribbean.

According to Roos there is no intent or ambition on the part of Cable and Wireless to sell off in the Caribbean.

Police Investigates an Apparent Suicide in Laborie
Officers attached to the Laborie Police Station are investigating an apparent suicide which occurred at Saphire, Laborie.

Reports indicate that about 9:20 a.m., on Friday, August 22, 2014, officers received a report that a man was observed hanging from a tree near the beach area in Saphire. He was transported to St. Jude’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police Force Seeks Public Assistance in Identifying Individuals Responsible for the Concealment of the Birth of a Newborn Noy
The Major Crimes Unit of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force is seeking the assistance of the public in identifying the person/persons who are responsible for the concealment of birth of a new born baby boy.

The baby was discovered in a black plastic bag at Ravine Chabot, Castries about 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, August 21, 2014. The baby was transported to Victoria Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

CID Investigates Death of Bois Patat Male
The Criminal Investigations Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Dallah Henry of Bois Patat, Morne Du Don, Castries.

About 2:42 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20, 2014, Officers attached to the Criminal Investigations Department, received a report from medical personnel of Victoria Hospital of a stabbing. Information received suggests that a male was brought into the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital, with what appears to be stab wounds to the upper body.

Daring Daylight Robbery at the IGY Rodney Bay Marina Over the Weekend
The Marine Consultant in the Ministry of Tourism has reacted to a report of a daring daylight robbery at the IGY Rodney bay Marina over the weekend, noting that criminals are getting more sophisticated in their attempts to break the law.

The incident which has been described as a disturbing trend by Mr Cuthbert Didier, is believed to have occurred on Sunday about 1:33 pm at the Marina fuel dock.

Police have made arrests following a burglary report which was filed with Gros Islet Police on August 9th.

It is alleged that a quantity of electronic items, computer software and hardware, perfumes, watches and jewelry, amounting to approximately $30,000.00 were stolen from the dwelling house of Thygerson Penn Joseph.

During a traffic check on the Richfond Highway on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, officers attached to the Richfond Police Station intercepted a white Toyota Swift motor car, registration number PE 172.

At the time of the interception, the motor car was driven by 32-year-old Prince Richardson of Lanse Road, Castries. Also on that vehicle were: 25-year-old Davis James of Coral Street, 40-year-old Roger “Spooner” Charles of Leslie Land and 23-year-old Ken Louis of La Clery, Castries.

LIME Caribbean CEO Calls for Government to Remove Tax Concessions on Smart Phone Device
A leading executive at telecommunications company LIME has called on regional governments to remove tax concessions on smart phone devices as a part of their market liberalisation programme. LIME Caribbean CEO Martin Roos says the move will better facilitate content creation and entrepreneurship, especially among young people.

He added that the move is also expected to allow Caribbean nationals and businesses to participate in the consumption, creation and commercialisation of mobile applications and digital content, that will assist in capitalising on the benefits of the thriving global technology industry.
