A local human rights attorney has reacted to a social problem that continues to affect women on the island.

Mr Martinus Francois was speaking to the number of rapes which have so far been reported in the local media from December last year.

He believes that the reluctance to report the sex crime is as a result of low confidence in the police force and the justice system.

He has advised women however not to make themselves an easy target.

Mr Francois has also reacted to news of a brutal domestic violence incident which has left one woman seriously injured.

Reports indicate that she does not want to press charges.

Francois says these matters should be removed from the perview of the victims.
