Agriculture Ministers  from St. Lucia and the rest of the OECS are currently preoccupied with eating into the sub-region's huge food import bill.

Addressing last Friday's inaugural OECS Council of Ministers of Agriculture in St. Vincent, Director General of the OECS Commision - Dr. Didicus Jules - disclosed that in 2011 the sub-region had a food import bill of US$ 473 million dollars.

This figure, according to him, accounted for 20% of total imports into the OECS.

Stating that three years may seem like a short period within which to achieve such ambitious targets, Dr. Jules stares the reality is for too long that there has been a dependence on small pilot initiatives to achieve results. Now is the time for bold action, ambitious targets and decisive political action.

Dr. Jules belies that the first arena of penetration should be the OECS. He says that entry into the market will require the attainment of European Standards.
