The commencement of the Ministry of Education`s distribution of laptop computers here to form four secondary school students have attracted both support and suspicion for the initiative.

Mr Melanius Alphonse of the Lucian Peoples Movement is one such individual who harbors mixed feelings.

During an interview Thursday with RCI News the unsuccessful candidate for the Soufriere/Fond St Jacque seat in the November ,2011 general election stated that while the initiative should be welcomed ,the political environment in which it is being undertaken should be a cause for concern.

The laptop initiative is the fulfillment of a campaign promise which was included in the St Lucia Labour Party manifesto.

Education Minister, Dr Robert Lewis, says the machines will serve as a tool for lifelong learning and is an extension of the classroom.

Regarding the praise and criticism being showered on the program ,he has made allowance for pros and cons.

Dr Lewis is a former Vice Principal of the St Mary`s College.
