An off season tropical storm that hit the Carolinas in the United States has prompted disaster officials here to sound the alarm.

The first named storm of the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season is now a tropical depression after dumping heavy rains with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour.

Although there have been no reports of damage Director of Met Services in St Lucia Thomas Auguste has urged local residents to be on guard, as this is not the first time that a weather system has developed outside of the traditional hurricane season.

The Atlantic Hurricane runs from June 1st to November 30.
