The St Lucia Nurses Association President says the commissioning of the New National Hospital will require additional manpower in the delivery of health care.

The observation comes as the organization conducts a series of tours to the health care institutions on the island and the level of concern already expressed about the shortage of nurses at the Victoria Hospital.

Alicia Baptiste says today’s visit highlighted the need for an increase in the nursing staff complement, particularly as the lay out of the medical centre is far different from what obtains at the island’s main healthcare facility.

Ms Baptiste says the organization has also met with many of its members at their workplace in order to get a better sense of the challenges and limitations that they face on the job.

The Nurses Association will continue its tours with a visit to all health care centres on the West Coast on June 26th following which it will tour facilities on the east island’s east coast
