There has been reaction from the National Coordinator for Legal and Human Rights following reports of the first fatal police shooting for 2015.

The incident which has been described as an unprovoked attack by eyewitnesses and family members of the deceased man who was mentally unstable has raised the ire of residents in Soufriere.

They are demanding justice for the man whom they say was no troublemaker.

Ms Mary Isaac says she is concerned with the frequency of such incidents here. She has pointed an accusatory finger at the state for failing to make the necessary reforms and investments that would arrest such incidents.

Ms Francis notes that the latest police killing raises the need for the establishment of a coroner’s court that will bring about a swift and independent investigation into such incidents.

Mr Francis believes that the latest police killing in Soufriere has only served to further strengthen the public’s show of no confidence in the local justice system.
