The introduction of increased vehicle license fees on St Lucians has been described as government’s way of pick pocketing the public.

The view was expressed by the General Secretary of the United Workers Party Oswald Augustin one day before the new measure takes effect.

He describes that increase as ill timed, and excessive especially as St Lucians continue to grapple with other increasing costs which have been imposed on them.

Speaking on possible alternatives to increasing taxes in light of the 75 million dollar deficit that government is seeking to bridge, Mr Augustin notes that government must refocus its priorities.

While the fees on some vehicles will increase by as much as 100%, minibuses, hearses, farmers and goods vehicles will remain the same.
