A leading Australian Cardiologist is the latest expert to add his voice to the dangers of life-threatening “broken heart syndrome.”

Dr Michael Ward has revealed that the acute stress associated with a heart-breaking event, such as bereavement, divorce or traumatic break-up, can prove fatal.

The Sydney-based cardiologist raised awareness about the danger signs and said patients suffering from the deadly syndrome often seem as though they are having a heart attack.

Dr Ward, who claims to have treated 200 cases of the syndrome, said the symptoms include chest pain and acute changes on the patient’s ECG indicating heart abnormalities.

“Broken heart syndrome is a response to major stress. It affects the brain cells and makes the heart not work correctly,” he told Daily Mail Australia.

“It affects far more women than men. There has been a lot of research, but nobody has come up with the answers,” he added.
