A local Marine Consultant in the Ministry of Tourism says news of the appointment of a Saudi Diplomat has come as a surprise to him.

The reaction comes after a press statement issued by the Communications department at the Office of the Prime Minister addressed concerns relating to a  Saudi Billionnaire who has been identified as St Lucia’s Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization based in London.

The communiqué informed that Dr Whalid Juffali’s appointment was made in April 2014 and that his record is public and well known. The statement added that the  appointment of Dr. Juffali is consistent with the efforts of the Government to appoint trade and investment envoys to assist in the promotion of Saint Lucia and to attract investment.

But Mr Cuthbert Didier who is preparing to make a pitch to maritime investors when he leaves St Lucia for Brussels on Friday, says he has never heard of Dr Juffali, neither has he consulted with him on any investment opportunities for St Lucia.

Mr Didier has been invited to the Brussels conference by Former Director General of the OECS Commission Dr Len Ishmael to make a presentation on a recently concluded yachting study to key investors.
