As the traditional hurricane season closed on November 30th local Met officials report that rainfall over St Lucia during that period was below normal.

The island had been gripped by drought conditions for the better part of 2015 with projections for a stretch into 2016.

According to Director of Met Services Venantius Descartes, rainfall outlook for St Lucia over the next three to six months is for a continuation of the below normal trend. Officials have therefore warned that drought mitigation measures must be taken especially during the dry season.

Meanwhile, the Met Services Director says tropical cyclone activity in the Caribbean region was near normal, this year with the formation of eleven named storms, four of which became hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

But Mr Descartes has urged St Lucians to continue paying attention to local weather reports advisories and bulletins even though the hurricane season is closed.
