The island’s national epidemiologist has reiterated a caution to the local public to guard against contracting the Zica virus which is spread by a strain of the Aides Egypti Mosquito.

The mosquito which is known to be responsible for the spread of the Dengue and Chikungunya virus can also cause further complications especially for pregnant mothers in their first and second trimesters.

The virus has presented itself in several Caribbean islands, the latest case being reported in neighbouring Martinique.

Mr Nahum Jn Baptiste notes that while health officials expect that the virus will enter St Lucia, they are continuing to urge St Lucians to be on guard.

Meanwhile Mr Jn Baptiste notes that officials have established a surveillance system in an effort to catch early cases of the disease here.
