St Vincent and the Grenadines is moving ahead with plans for draft legislation to regulate a marijuana industry there.

The move follows similar steps taken by the government of Jamaica following regional calls for the decriminalization of the drug.

Speaking on the issue last week Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves confirmed that he is expected to review a draft on the establishment of a pharmaceutical industry in St Vincent.

He further noted that decriminalization of the drug for social and religious use could also be a consideration.

But Dr Gonsalves stressed that the process will take place in phases focusing on the pharmaceutical industry first.

There has been no shift in St Lucia’s position on the marijuana issue, despite several calls for a revision on the current policy.
