The National Health Security Committee headed by Cabinet Secretary, Darrel Montrope has zoomed in on the Zika Virus as a national priority on the heels of a pronouncement from the director at the World Health Organization.

Dr. Margaret Chan, has declaration that Zika virus (ZIKV) represents a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). A similar sentiment was expressed by the WHO on the Ebola when it was described as an global health emergency in 2014.

Speaking on the significance of a meeting that brought together representatives of various sectors, Montrope stressed that participants must be brought up to speed with the implications, threats and responses to the Zica virus.

Montrope has addressed concerns about the way forward following the stakeholder meeting. He says apart from the message of prevention, there is a heavy focus on how people who are infected with Zika will be treated.

Health officials believe that it is only a matter of time before the virus can reach St Lucia. It has already been confirmed in Martinique
