As the eyes of the world focused on Cuba for the historic visit of President Barack Obama, the St Lucia Cuba Humanistic Solidarity Association is weighing on the impact of the visit.

According to the organization’s President Rawle Harvey, the thawing of relations between Cuba and the United States is welcomed but the blockade still exists.

While Obama’s visit signals a sign of good faith, he says several tangible steps must be taken to normalize relations between the communist state and the US, including the return of Guantanamo bay.

But Harvey notes that Obama’s visit has created a positive impression both on Cuba and the rest of the world.

The President of the St Lucia Cuba Humanistic solidarity Association has also debunked claims that the Cuban tourism market will present stiff competition for the rest of the region. He says Cuba’s tourism product is not new, and its offering is different from others in the region.

Harvey is hoping that St Lucia’s strong relationship with Cuba will encourage the United States to be more friendly towards Cuba
