After several opposition calls for the resignation of the head of the Citizenship by Investment board, Dr Ernest Hilaire has stepped down.

According to United Workers Party leader Allen Chastanet who was at the forefront of the lobbying, the Hilaire was not a suitable candidate for the job.

He argued that the former CIP involvement in the Juffali affair and lingering questions about his relationship with the Saudi Businessman disqualified Hilaire to lead an organization that sells St Lucian passports to foreign investors.

Dr Hilaire who served as the former British High Commissioner has been confirmed as the St Lucia Labour Party candidate for the Castries South constituency. He replaces Dr Robert Lewis who signalled his exit from public office earlier this year

RCI news contacted Dr Hilaire earlier today but he did not wish to comment on the development. He did however confirm that he had resigned as Chairman of the CIP Board
