The 28 year old woman who has been diagnosed with Zika is pregnant.

The confirmation during Thursday  RCI’s News Spin program. Medical officials have been seeking to confirm the connection between the Zika virus and microcephaly, a birth defect where a baby's head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age.

However, on Thursday the World Health Organization confirmed that the Zika virus can cause this disorder.

Medical officer in the Ministry of Health Dr Sharon Belmar George says the ministry is taking the necessary steps to provide the requisite care for the patient.

Neighboring islands including Barbados and Trinidad are suggesting that the laws in their countries should exceptions for pregnant women, who have been diagnosed with zika, by allowing them to have the option of abortion.

With regard to St.Lucia George that decision is not within the purview of the Ministry of health.

Representatives from the Ministry of Health have emphasized that they will not violate human rights by suggesting that women delay pregnancies—an option which has been suggested by other countries dealing with the epidemic.
