The island’s Minister for Infrastructure has responded to pronouncements made on government’s decision to guarantee a 3 million US dollar loan for cash strapped regional carrier LIAT.

In his explanation Mr Philip J Pierre has made a comparison between his and the previous United Workers party administration on their level of support for the airline.

Former Tourism Minister Allen Chastanet has strongly criticized the move but Mr Pierre says it is unfair to describe St Lucia’s involvement in Liat’s affair as a waste of money.

Mr Pierre stressed that no monies will be spent on Liat unless the airline encounters financial difficulties.

He also explained that comparisons been made on the cost of airplanes between present day and the 1970 are outrageous.

Mr Pierre also pointed out that the government’s guarantee to Liat will not come unless certain conditions are met.
