A proposal for the establishment of a sex offenders’ registry is being put to the people again, this time in the form of a panel discussion on the issue.

It is being hosted by the Saint Lucia Association of Social Workers in collaboration with The University of the West Indies Open Campus Saint Lucia, in light of an apparent increase in the number of reported cases of sexual assault, particularly rape occurring here.

In explaining the motivation for such an initiative, the organization’s President Kendell Elva notes that while proponents believe that a registry will serve as a deterrent, the impact of that initiative must also be taken into consideration.

Elva is of the view that while calls have been made in support of a sex offenders registry, there are risks associated with it.

The topic to be discussed is “Perspectives on a Sex Offender Registry” and will be held on Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016 at 6:00 pm at The UWI Open Campus, Morne Fortune.
