The youth arm of the United Workers Party joins with the rest of the World to celebrate and recognize the United Nations’ (UN) Universal Children’s Day under the theme ‘STOP THE VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN.

Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on the 20th of November each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare. In a statement released by United Youth, the organization says in November 2012, statistics from the Division of Human Services of the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Human Services and Gender Relations show that in Saint Lucia, between 2009 and 2011, there were 725 reported cases of child abuse on the island, 239 of these cases involved male victims. In 2009, the total number of reported cases was 232. This number rose in 2011 to 254.

The youth organization insists that as a Country and people, all St Lucians have a duty to protect the nation’s children from paedophiles and other sexual predators.

The organization has also called on teachers and parents to be vigilant, to children’s pleas for help. It has also made an appeal to correct and discourage children who partake in bullying.

Just Tuesday, the Division of Human services launched its End the silence campaign to Child Sexual Abuse.
