The establishment of a Festivals commission which will work closely with the new Tourism authority will become functional in January next year.

The announcement was made on Friday when key tourism and culture officials addressed members of the media to explain the mandate of the new entity.

Minister for Local Government and Culture Fortuna Belrose explained that the basis for the establishment of the Festivals Commission is to allow St Lucians to maximize the economic potential of the island’s rich cultural heritage.

She adds that it is because of the disconnect that exists across sectors and the absence of linkages between them. Belrose notes that greater effectiveness in the creative industries will bring several benefits for all St Lucians.

Belrose says government anticipates the tensions that will be caused by the new changes, but stressed that they are necessary in bringing together national activities as part of a package.

She adds that the new tourism authority will work together with the Festivals Commission to better market the local product overseas.

The Festivals Commission will be housed within the Department of local government and culture.
