The Secretary of the St Lucia Lifesaving Association has called for St Lucians to prioritize swimming following news of the latest drowning.

The bodies of two men who had ventured out to see on a fishing expedition were fished out of the water this week. The two men met their demise despite suggestions that they were excellent swimmers.

Terrol Compton says while it is important for St Lucians to learn to swim, it is equally important for them to learn life saving techniques, if they encounter difficulty while in the water.

Compton stressed that the training should start at the school level

Compton has also called for government to show tangible commitment to saving lives and mitigating the chances of drowning by establishing a lifeguard system and placing the requisite infrastructure on the island’s beaches.

The Lifesaving Association continues to lament the number of drownings that occur on the island’s beaches.
