Despite the silence of executive members on the National Council on Public Transportation, minibus operators have been reacting to news of a proposed increase in fares.

According to reports the new charges are expected to take effect some time in January of 2015, but several local minibus operators have opposed the move.

Speaking to a spokesperson for the Vieux Fort route, Mr Philip Jn baptiste says any imposed increases will have a devastating effect on the public transportation sector and will reduce the number of commuters opting to use the service.

Mr Jn Baptiste has put forward a recommendation which he believes will keep the fares affordable, particularly at this time when passengers are struggling to cope with other increasing costs. He is of the view the only solution is for government increases its subsidy on petroleum products.
