The National Emergency Management Organization has warned that the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season must not be used as a gauge for disaster preparedness.

Nemo Director Velda Joseph made the pronouncement as St Lucians brace for what forecasters predict will be an above average season with a total of 11 to 17 named storms;

  • Five to 9 of which would become hurricanes and
  • 2 to 4 of which would become major hurricanes.

Joseph has advised families and communities to plan ahead in order to minimize the impact of any eventuality.

While the focus remains on the hurricane season, Joseph stressed that there must be a general approach to disaster preparedness as it can strike in various forms.

The Nemo Director says her office is on standby to activate the radio broadcast interrupt system to disseminate information before and during a hurricane. She has also reminded the public to take additional steps to stay informed during the hurricane season by heeding the advisories issued by the Met office. The public can also download the NEMO app.
