One of two inmates armed with prison made weapons at the Bordelais Correctional Facility has been shot by prison guards during an altercation with another individual.

According to Communications Officer at the prison, Kerwin Albert officials were forced to fire a live round at the inmate who had attempted to attack officials.

Albert says all attempts to calm the situation failed, forcing officers to take strong action. He adds that a prison search which followed the incident resulted in the discovery of several weapons. The officers involved in the incident did not sustain serious injuries

Albert stressed that the situation which is the first of its kind at the Prison, took officers by surprise. He notes that an internal and external investigation has opened into the incident.

The names of the individuals involved in the incident are expected to be released after charges are preferred. The offences could include incite to mutiny as well as assault and could run concurrently with the inmates sentences.
