It was not difficult to figure out who the favourites were when the semi finals of the Calypso Monarch competition opened at the national Cultural Centre on Sunday.

The observation comes from the Chairman on the Calypso Management committee Claude Paul who notes that the contenders gave an excellent account of themselves with strong performances.

He says the standing room only crowd appeared to have a preference for the protest songs, but he also singled out Solange’s performance and that of the new comers.

Meanwhile, Paul says the preliminaries of the Power and groovy soca monarch competitions which took place on Friday, surpassed expectation.

A last minute decision to move to an alternative venue at the Vigie Sports Complex car park did not disrupt the show.

And preparations are already well advanced for the staging of the finals which will take place at the Sab in Vigie. Meanwhile the Events Company has informed that there will be a simultaneous release of the results for the calypso, power and groovy competitions at 2:30 today.
