The Director at the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) has supported calls for mandatory enforcement of orders for islandwide shutdown in case of disasters.

This comes amid reports that some businesses have ignored the advice issued by Acting Prime Minister Lenard Montoute for the closure of schools and businesses to remain closed as St Lucia and other islands in the Lesser Antilles braces for the effects of Hurricane Maria today.

NEMO Director Velda Joseph described the situation as unfortunate, noting that the safety of all St Lucians must be a priority for employers.

Meanwhile, Joseph stressed that Hurricane Maria has intensified and is now a category 2 system which is expected to dump showers and cause thunderstorms in St Lucia.

The NEMO director notes that due to the threat of flooding in low lying areas, residents are advised to take the necessary precautions.
