The seismic research Unit of the University of the West Indies has confirmed the occurrence of a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on Sunday morning.

According to the Director at the National Emergency Management Organization Velda Joseph, the quake was reported as felt in several Caribbean islands, including Trinidad, St Lucia and Grenada. However she notes that there have been no reports of major damage.

Joseph adds that NEMO received several calls from residents in the south of the island where the quake was strongest.

The Nemo Director says Sunday’s earthquake has reiterated the need for disaster preparedness, and the importance of a plan.

She has issued a reminder of the earthquake protocol in order to minimize damage and loss during a disaster.

Joseph warns that disasters can come in various forms and that the public must remain on guard for any eventuality.
