Unemployment figures in St Lucia have dropped according to a new report compiled by the Department of Statistics.

The conclusion was made following a comparison of the figures in the third quarter of 2016 compared to the same period in 2017.

Director of Statistics Edwin St Catherine notes that the dominant reason for the decline in unemployment is because of improvements in the labour market, particularly accommodation and service activity. Additionally, he says the increase in employment is largely due to the performance of the construction sector. The improvements amount to some four thousand jobs.

Making direct reference to youth unemployment, St Catherine says the figures do not indicate any significant difference with a decline of nearly 1.6 percent this year compared to last year.

The Director of Statistics stressed that St Lucia continues to face a tough time in the labour market but projections show that the country is on track to see a further decline in unemployment. According to St Catherine, the statistics also indicate a decline in poverty levels.

The margin of error used to determine the statistics was +/- 2 percent.
