The government is moving to provide a short term financial reprieve for several thousand unskilled workers ahead of the Christmas season.

The announcement comes from the island’s Minister for Equity Lenard Montoute, who informed that the government has initiated Christmas Stimulus Programme that will offer people jobs in the various constituencies.

The program is being handled jointly by parliamentarians and the St Lucia Social Development fund. It will take the form of beautification exercises around the island.

Montoute says the initiative is not intended to replace the STEP program, but it is temporary solution as government seeks to come up with a more long term plan to address unemployment.

Montoute explains the objective behind the program which he says will be initiated in cycles.

The program is currently being opened in various constituencies.
